Hi, I'm Janina - I design surface patterns by hand, then turn them into repeating patterns on the computer. Everything starts as something physical on my desk: cut paper, torn edges, drawn lines and stamp marks.
I have a thing for geometric shapes with a soft, retro edge - patterns that feel like they were block-printed: inky, a little uneven, made to last. I'm especially fascinated by techniques like screen printing and riso printing, and I try to carry that texture and feel into my own patterns.
I've lived in three different countries so far, most recently landing in beautiful Vienna (Austria). And maybe that's what happens when you keep starting over in new places - you notice things locals stop seeing. Somewhere along the way, it turned into a habit of spotting patterns everywhere I go: tiles, fences, windows lining up down a street, or just the shadow a railing throws across the pavement at a certain hour.
I leave the little imperfections in my work—a wobbly line, an uneven shape. They're not mistakes to be fixed; they're proof that each piece was made by hand.
